Background:Dr Robert is a bioethicist and philosopher of science. At Arizona State University, he directs the Bioethics, Policy, and Law Program, part of the Center for Biology and Society; he is also a faculty member in the Consortium for Science, Policy, and Outcomes. Prior to joining the faculty at ASU, he was Canadian Institutes of Health Research New Investigator and Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Dalhousie University. Dr Robert has a 50% appointment in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences at the College of Medicine - Phoenix, where is the Medicine and Society Theme Director and Director of Education of the Scholarly Project. He was Program Co-chair for the 2008 meeting of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, and serves on the Advisory Board of the Canadian Institute of Population and Public Health. In 2008, ASU President Crow selected Robert as one of a handful of Promotion and Tenure "Exemplars" who exhibit the characteristics of excellent scholarship, teaching, and service that represent the New American University. Research Interests:Dr Robert has published extensively in both bioethics and the philosophy of science, on a wide range of topics including developmental biology, genetics, neuroscience, psychiatry, and public and population health. His first book, Embryology, Epigenesis, and Evolution: Taking Development Seriously, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2004. Dr Robert's research currently focuses on the justification of research in the neurosciences, with a special focus on model organisms and animal models. This work is funded by the James S. McDonnell Foundation. He is completing a new book on the ethics of controversial science, tentatively entitled Chimeras, Cyborgs, and the Moral Limits of Science.
