Welcome!
The Department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) at the new expansion of The University of Arizona (UA) College of Medicine – Phoenix in partnership with Arizona State University (ASU) is a multidisciplinary unit designed to deliver the basic sciences curriculum to first- and second-year medical students as well as to perform cutting edge translational biomedical research. In contrast to a number of single, discipline-derived basic science departments traditional in most medical schools, the UA College of Medicine – Phoenix Program consists of a one Basic Medical Sciences Department populated by a blended faculty with expertise in areas such as anatomy, behavioral science, biochemistry/molecular biology, biomedical informatics, cancer biology, cell and developmental biology, genetics, immunobiology, microbiology, neuroscience, pathology, pharmacology and physiology. The concept of a diverse yet integrated faculty in BMS is correlated with the PhoenixMed curriculum that is systems-based and fully integrated with respect to basic and clinical sciences. Moreover, the new curriculum focuses on educating physicians for the 21st century by emphasizing personalized medicine, biomedical informatics and genomics, while at the same time requiring students to complete 4-year longitudinal scholarly research projects in one of the following four fields: public health, medical ethics/humanism, molecular medicine and biomedical informatics. The faculty is committed to excellence in the education of students and to mentoring them in scientific research.
The basic medical sciences are central and fundamental not only to educating the next generation of physicians for Arizona, but also to improving the lives of all Arizonans through scientific breakthroughs in translational medical research which will make an impact in preventing and treating cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and neurological disorders.
The mission of the BMS Department is to excel in educating medical and graduate students and to provide the driving force for an economically energizing biomedical research enterprise in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
