Community Overview & Outreach

The Basic Medical Sciences Faculty are deeply involved in, and committed to, community service in the Greater Phoenix Metropolitan area.  We strive to be in touch with our constituents in the community and, during the Spring of 2007, participated in the following outreach activities:

  • Members of the Faculty spoke to community leaders in the Project Medical Education Forum on subjects such as melanoma and clinical anatomy
  • Faculty members gave lectures to community members in the Mini-Med School format, for example on “The Brain as CEO”
  • Four faculty volunteered as instructors in the Maricopa Med-Start Program for local minority high school students
  • Three faculty served as judges of the medical and scientific presentations during Academic Excellence Day under the auspices of the Arizona Medical Education Consortium
  • The Department Head served as “Principal-For-A-Day” at the Phoenix Preparatory Academy, spoke to a Copper Square Downtown business group as well as at Valley Leadership Day about the impact of the College of Medicine in the Metro area, and participated in the VISN Research Forum at the Carl T. Hayden VA Hospital.
  • A faculty member lectured on prenatal care at medical community summits at Maryvale Hospital and in South Phoenix; another of our faculty provided lectures at the Rio Verde Community Center, The Phoenix Spirit of the Senses Salon, and the Tempe Jewish Women's Symposium on the subjects of nanotechnology, the brain, and bioethics.
